Olivier Massebeuf , born in Lyon , 1963
I graduated from l'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris in the 1980's ( drawing section ) and then decided to study English at the University Paris XII ( now Upec ) . After a year as a French assistant in London I started a job as an illustrator for a Roleplaying Games magazine in Paris until 1991 when I became a teacher of English .I am currently teaching English in a business school ( Paris , 17e ) along with painting which I have been doing professionally since 2004 .
I have participated in a first exhibition organised by Amnesty International in Montreuil in 2004 and then have taken part in several others in Paris while also showing my work in Blackheath Gallery ( London , 2007 – 2016 ) and in Art Generation Gallery ( Paris 3e , 2007 to this day ) .
Statement
Ever since I came across the works of Egon Schiele , Francis Bacon or Lucian Freud as a teenager , I knew drawing and painting would have to be an addiction . Strangely enough I seriously took to painting as a student in English . I was then more inclined to express feelings by means of Lyrical Abstraction ( influenced by artists like Hans Hartung ) than through figurative painting .
Nevertheless , as I started working on a Comics project in 1985 I realized figuration was a more natural medium for me . Whatever the mediums I have used so far though, I have come to realize that emotion is my main concern and I would qualify my work as ' automatic ' since it mainly derives from feelings I'm not so keen on accounting for, which might be likened with André Breton's ' automatic writing ' . The meaning often emerges afterwards .
